Umrah During Christmas Holidays 2026- Is It Worth It?

Umrah During Christmas Holidays 2026

Yes, if your dates are fixed by school holidays or work. Christmas gives you up to 16 days away for about 7 days of annual leave, plus mild weather. But it is the most expensive and crowded fortnight of winter, so your dates matter more than the month.

Every November, our London phones fill with one question. Can we do Umrah over Christmas? For many UK families, the year-end holidays are the only time off they get together, so the answer really matters.

This Christmas Umrah guide skips general December advice. It covers the holiday fortnight: leave tricks, departure date choices, two crowded Fridays, real prices and booking deadlines. It draws on what our coordinators see each winter.

Key Dates for UK Pilgrims In Christmas 2026 at a Glance

Most families plan backwards from the school calendar, yet the bank holidays matter just as much. In 2026, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day both land on a Friday, which shapes all your departure windows.

Date or period

What it means for your trip

England schools

Most break around Fri 18 Dec and return around Mon 4 Jan

Wales and Northern Ireland

Similar pattern, but dates vary by council or board

Scotland schools

Often break and return a few days later

UK bank holidays

Fri 25 Dec, Mon 28 Dec (Boxing Day substitute), Fri 1 Jan

Scotland extra holiday

Mon 4 Jan (2 January substitute)

Islamic month

1 Rajab 1448 expected around 10 Dec (Umm al-Qura)

Always confirm your own council’s term dates before paying a deposit. One more overlap: Rajab starts around 10 December, so most Christmas trips fall inside a sacred month. Our December guide covers the scholarly details.

How to Get 16 Days Away for Just 7 Days of Leave

Here is a trick we share with nearly every working client. Three bank holidays sit inside the break, so a full fortnight in Makkah and Madinah costs you far less holiday leave than people expect.

Total

16 days away

7 leave days

Fly out Saturday and return Sunday, and you have 15 nights. That easily covers a classic 7 nights Makkah, 7 nights Madinah split, with one spare night for proper rest or a quiet Ziyarat day.

Short Trip Option for Workers Who Can’t Take a Full Fortnight

Cannot take a full fortnight? A short Christmas Umrah still works. Leave on Boxing Day, use just three leave days, and come back by 3 January. Seven to ten nights is enough for first-time pilgrims.

Shift-Workers and NHS Staff

Nurses, carers and transport staff rarely get Christmas off. We often suggest swapping a Christmas shift for New Year, then flying 2 January. Fares soften, the Haram calms, and early to mid-January weather stays pleasant.

Best and Worst Departure Dates Over Christmas

The date you fly decides more than the hotel you pick. Two families can stay at the same 4-star hotel and pay very different prices for identical nights, simply because one left four days earlier.

Short trips and workers

Our honest family pick is 18–19 December. You pay school-holiday fares, but you finish Umrah before the 25th rush. Flying 22–24 December usually means paying the highest fares and arriving straight into peak Haram crowds.

Return Dates That Get Children Home Before School Restarts

Most English schools restart around 4 January, so aim to land by the 2nd. Children need a day to unpack, sleep and settle in. Returning on the 3rd works, but tired children start term poorly.

Makkah-First vs Madinah-First Over Christmas

Usually we suggest landing in Madinah first. Over Christmas, we flip it. Put your Makkah nights before the 25th, finish Umrah while Tawaf routes are calmer, then take the fast Haramain train north to Madinah.

The Two Friday Peaks Such As Christmas Day and New Year’s Day

This detail rarely appears in guides. Both 25 December and 1 January are Fridays, and Friday is also the Saudi weekend. Local families, Gulf visitors and Western holidaymakers all arrive at the Haram for Jumu’ah together.

On these days, we tell groups to arrive early, ideally two hours before the khutbah. Head for the upper floors or roof, agree a numbered gate as your meeting point, and keep all phones charged.

What Christmas and New Year’s Eve Are Like in Makkah and Madinah

What Christmas and New Year’s Eve Are Like in Makkah and Madinah

First-timers sometimes expect lights or festive menus. You will honestly find none. Christmas is simply an ordinary day in Saudi Arabia, and shops, hotels, taxis and transfers run exactly as usual in both holy cities.

What changes is the crowd. Holiday travel from Europe, America and Southeast Asia overlaps, so prayer times feel very tight. New Year’s Eve itself passes quietly, with most pilgrims sleeping early before Fajr and Tahajjud.

Christmas Umrah Prices And Why They Jump and 4 Ways to Save

Prices climb because demand rises, airline surcharges arrive and hotels fill together. Our December from-prices start around £1,163 per person for seven nights at 3-star. Christmas departures cost noticeably more, so ask for live quotes.

  1. One-stop flights via Istanbul or Doha instead of direct routes.
  2. Regional airports such as Birmingham, Manchester or Glasgow.
  3. Quad or triple rooms: shared rooms cut the cost per head.
  4. 4-star hotels at 400–600 m instead of 5-star hotels facing the Haram.

Honestly, combining two of these usually saves more than chasing any flash sale. A family of four sharing a quad at a 4-star hotel often spends less per head than two couples booking separate doubles.

Booking Deadlines for a Christmas Vacations Umrah

Late planners lose the best rooms, not the trip itself. Treat this timeline below as a rough guide. Each step depends on the one before, and peak dates fill faster than any other winter week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Go for Umrah on Christmas Day?

Yes. Christmas has no effect on Umrah in Saudi Arabia, and Nusuk permit slots open as normal. Remember it is also a Friday, so book a late-night slot and avoid the busy hours around Jumu’ah.

Usually by a clear margin. Early December avoids school-holiday demand, so fares and rooms cost noticeably less. From about 18 December, airline surcharges and busy hotels push package prices up across every hotel tier.

Within the holidays, flights on 26 or 27 December are often cheaper than 22–24 December. Outside them, 1–17 December or early to mid-January usually beat any Christmas date. Comparing regional airports also helps a lot.

Yes, almost certainly. Saudi Arabia’s Umm al-Qura calendar expects Rajab 1448 to begin around 10 December 2026. It runs until early January, so any Christmas trip sits inside this sacred month, subject to moon sighting.

Using three leave days from 29 to 31 December, you can travel from Boxing Day to 3 January. That gives you eight full nights, enough for Umrah, Madinah and a short Ziyarah without rushing.
